The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections till next week Saturday February 23, 2019.
Governorship and State Assembly elections were postponed to March 9.
INEC leadership comprising the National Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu and 12 National Commissioners on Friday night had an emergency meeting over the uncertainty created by the logistics problems facing the distribution of sensitive voting materials for Saturday’s presidential and Bational Assembly elections.
Prof. Yakubu who briefed the media after the meeting said the decision was a difficult one. He said the postponement will afford the commission to address the challenges in order to organise a free, fair and credible election.
It will not be the first time that the commission would postpone a scheduled general election.
In 2015, the presidential election was shifted from February 14 to March 28, 2015; while the governorship and Assembly elections scheduled for February 28 were shifted to April 11.
