Federal lawmakers have given the police and the Department of State Security (DSS) 24 hours to find and return the mace which was snatched by thugs who invaded the senate chambers this morning.
The senate in a statement issued by its spokesman, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said the thugs are supporters of suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.
It called the invasion and theft “an act of treason as it is an attempt to overthrow the Federal Government of Nigeria by force”
Deputy Senate President in his reaction said the thugs in addition to stealing the mace, tried to kidnap two senators.
Members the House of Representatives joined the senators in solidarity.
The senate resumed plenary after the incident using a substitute mace.
