A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Delta State allegedly had to pay the sum of N3million as ransom to regain his freedom from kidnappers.
Reports said the DPO, identified as Mr Okoro, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was kidnapped last weekend between Onicha-Ugbo and Issele-Uku along the Benin-Onitsha expressway by gunmen who shot sporadically before whisking him to unknown destination.
Okoro headed Galilee Police Station, Ute-Ogbeje Community in Ika North East L.G.A
It was gathered that the victim was freed Sunday after the ransom was dropped at a location.
But the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeyinka Adeleke denied the incident and the subsequent payment of ransom, saying that it was the DPO’s friend that was kidnapped.
Adeleke said the police will not encourage the payment of ransom.
