A mayor in Mexico, Alejandro Aparicio Santiago, was shot dead on his first day in office on new year’s day, News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Santiago, mayor of Tlaxiaco, was walking to his first official meeting at the city hall shortly after taking the oath of office, when a group of gunmen opened fire, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office of Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca.
He was taken to hospital, where he died. Four other people were wounded in the attack.
Governor Alejandro Murat of Oaxaca confirmed the killing of Santiago Tuesday through his twitter handle.
Murat condemned Santiago’s murder promising a thorough investigation. He said a suspect has been apprehended.
A non profit media organisation based in Washington, United States, National Public Radio reported that 175 politicians has been killed in Mexico between September 2017 and August 2018, citing the consulting firm Etellekt.
