The Local Government elections in Oyo state holding today would have passed as generally peaceful but a teenage girl was killed at Ido Oro area of Ibadan while the polls were going on.
The girl, simply identified as Kofo, was hit by a stray bullet as a fracas broke out among some hoodlums in the area. Personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were called on the quell the violence.
Reports said the girl was hit on her way back from a pharmaceutical shop where she had gone to buy some drugs.
NAN, citing accounts by residents, reports that some hoodlums were fomenting trouble in the area when the NSCDC were called in.
The residents alleged that the girl was killed by a stray bullet belonging to the NSCDC in the ensuing clash.
Olusegun Oluwole, spokesman of the NSCDC in the state, confirmed the incident, but said men of the command were not responsible for the killing of the teenager.
He said the hoodlums were already shooting before the arrival of the NSCDC team. He disclosed that the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to NAN, the hoodlums were said to have later attacked the NSCDC divisional office in Ibadan North West local government council at Ekotedo, vandalising the premises. But officers of the NSCDC mobilised and repelled the attack.
