Senator Ahmed Lawan has emerged President of the 9th Senate. He recorded a landslide victory in the election held on the floor of the senate on Tuesday during the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly.
Lawan, who represents Yobe North, scored 79 votes while his only rival, Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, scored 28 votes.
All the 107 senators-elect present voted in a secret ballot system.
Lawan, who was the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress APC) leadership, had needed just about 63 votes to be declared winner.
He was sworn in immediately after the election which was conducted by Clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori
