A Special Adviser to Delta State Governor, identified simply as Ngozi Ijei has been shot dead. Reports said he was killed last night in Ekpan, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.
Some youths are reportedly mobilizing to avenge his death.
In the last couple of weeks, there has been an upsurge of violence in the area, which has however been a hotbed of crisis and politically-motivated violence since 2003.
The current Delta South Senatorial candidate of the PDP and incumbent House of Representative member in Uvwie/Sapele/Okpe Federal Constituency, Ms Evelyn Oboro, hails from the area.
While Oboro is seeking reelection, former chairman of the council, Mr. Henry Baro, is aiming to take over her seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governorship candidate of the APC, Mr. Great Ogboru, is also said to enjoy hige followership in the area. Recall that in 2003, Ogboru’s supporters and the supporters of then Governor James Ibori clashed in the area, leaving dozens of houses burnt.
Ijei was standing trial for sundry crimes, including murder, but was controversially released from prison before being appointed SA on Community and Youth Affairs to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in 2016
