An aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, on Monday condemned Kano State governor, Umar Ganduje, and the Kano State Government for sponsoring the wedding of 1500 couples in the state.
Omokri, in a series of tweets criticised the governor for spending millions of naira to conduct mass marriages instead of spending it on “mass education.”
The Kano State Government had over the weekend conducted mass wedding for 1500 couples.
The Governor, Ganduje, who together with the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, presided over the wedding, revealed that the state spent over N300 million to provide furniture, payment of dowry for the grooms, provision of complete sets of beds, side mirrors, wardrobes and mattresses for the couples.
According to Ganduje, “the gesture was targeted at alleviating the sufferings of the people and aimed at reducing the problems associated with the high number of unmarried youth in the state.”
Reacting, Omokri, lambasted the governor for spending millions of naira on mass marriage instead of catering for the education of out of school children in the state.
He wrote:” Kano State alone has over 3 million out of school children roaming the streets, yet their thief of a Governor and MBuhari ally, @GovUmarGanduje, just spent millions to conduct mass marriages for 1500 mutanen Kano. What Kano needs is MASS EDUCATION, not MASS MARRIAGE.”
He also criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for not addressing the issue of out of school children that is prevalent in northern Nigeria, adding that the country would never be peaceful if the children are not educated.
“Northern Nigeria has 12 million out of school children. @MBuhari, who sent his own children to school in England, has not built even one school for them. But @GEJonathan built 165 almajiri schools because if we don’t educate those 12 million kids, Nigeria will NEVER have peace!,” Omokri stated.
